Be Careful When You Wash Your Coloured Hair

Hair washing advice Aberdeen Hair SalonThe way in which you wash your hair and how frequently you do so plays a big part in how long your hair colour will last. First of all, we recommend that you do not wash your hair for at least 24 hours after your hair colour appointment. This will allow the hair colour time to really settle into your hair.

Ideally you should wait 72 hours before washing your hair at home after having it coloured (although we understand this may feel like a long time – especially if you’ve been to the gym!)   If you can hold off, however, this will allow your hair cuticle the three full days it needs to fully reseal itself after the hair colouring process.  Once the cuticle is sealed the colour is more firmly established inside your hair, meaning it won’t wash away so easily.

Generally, you should think carefully about how frequently you wash your coloured hair after this.  The more you do so, the more your hair colour will fade. If you currently wash your hair every day, you could try washing it every other day and see how this feels.  Ideally avoid washing your hair more than twice a week.

Be Careful How You Wash Your Coloured Hair

Hair washing advice Westhill hair salonWhen you do wash your hair, apply the shampoo to the roots only.  This is where the oil and dirt builds up and is the only area which really needs direct application of shampoo.  Avoid applying the shampoo directly onto the lengths of your hair, as this can strip the colour away.  This is especially so if you aren’t using specialist colour protection shampoo.

Coloured hair will require conditioning, but it's important to avoid the roots in this case.  Focus instead on the mid-lengths to ends of your hair, where it can tend to become dry and damaged. Avoiding the roots stops your hair looking greasy too quickly, so prevents you having to wash it so frequently.

Finishing your wash with a cold rinse is a good idea as this helps to seal the hair cuticle back down, thus protecting your hair colour further.  It also helps to make your hair sleeker and shinier.

Use The Right Products For Colour-Treated Hair

Prevent Hair Colour Fading Wella Salon WesthillWhen choosing shampoo and conditioner, it's vital to use the right products for colour-treated hair.  It really is a false economy to use cheap brands which can contain harsh chemicals.  To protect your investment in your hair colour, we recommend using professional salon quality products.

In particular, look out for sulphate-free hair care products, which are gentler on the hair.  Speak to your west with style colourist who can recommend the best Wella products for your hair.   As well as using the right shampoo it's important to use a good quality conditioner or hair mask.  This is because the colouring process can leave your hair dry, which can make it become brittle and look dull.

Boost Your Colour With Wella Professional Products

Wella Invigo Color Recharge at west with style salon aberdeenshireIf you feel that your hair colour has faded and need a top-up, you can refresh your hair colour with a shampoo specifically for your hair colour. For example, remove brassy tones from blonde hair with a purple shampoo, such as the new Wella System Professional Luxe Blonde shampoo.

Alternatively, Wella Professionals Invigo Color Recharge shampoos and conditioners refresh and maintain the multi-dimensional colour of blondes, reds and brunette tones, leaving hair intensively conditioned.

The products also contain colour pigments to help maintain the brightness and vibrancy of your hair colour between colour appointments.

Protect Your Hair From Heat Damage and the Sun

Summer Hair Care Advice Aberdeenshire hair salon jason blackeye unsplashWe all know that heated styling tools can damage our hair if  used without protection, and the same applies to UV rays and heat from the sun.  The sun's rays can break down chemical bonds in the hair which can result in your hair becoming dull, brittle and dry and your colour looking faded.

Protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or apply an SPF for the hair, such as Wella Invigo.  The range includes product which will protect and repair coloured hair before, during and after sun exposure.

Meanwhile, if you want to use heated styling tools on your hair (and it's best avoided if possible!), always make sure you use heat protection, such as Wella EIMI.  Speak to your stylist for advice on the best product to use.
