Hair colouring techniques at west with style hairdressers in Westhill
With so many amazing hair colour techniques available, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming as to what each service entails. Find out more about hair colour terminology below…
Highlights & Lowlights
Highlights are a popular hair colour technique where fine sections of hair are usually lightened and added throughout your hair, or wherever you desire!
Lowlights tend to be darker or richer colours – perhaps rich brown tones, dark reds or vibrant colours.
We can touch up the roots of already coloured hair or lighten a darker base.
With highlights and lowlights, your hair will look more natural as the colour grows out as there is a less definite line between colour and regrowth than if you have a full head of colour.
When you’ve had your hair pre-lightened, highlighted or had a full head of colour, your hair colour expert may recommend we add a toner to your hair.
A toner can be used to brighten dull looking hair and enhance its shine and condition.
It is also a great way to neutralise any yellow, orange or brassy tones in your hair.
For example, to get a cool ash blonde, we might lift your hair colour with pre-lightener to the correct level before then toning it to get to exactly the right tone you desire.
Colour glossing is a brilliant way to make your hair shiny. A colour gloss can be added to boost dull and lifeless hair and will also help smooth flyaway hair.
Gloss treatments can be clear or tinted which makes them ideal for virgin or coloured hair to create tone and shine.
A gloss treatment will close the hair cuticle which results is a smooth surface texture that will reflect a lot more light and have a much softer feel.
Tinted treatments can help enhance or maintain your hair colour, which means it will maintain its vibrancy for longer. Glossing treatments last for about six weeks, gradually fading.
Ombré hair colour
Ombré is a French word which means ‘shaded’ or ‘shading’.
Your hair will generally be darker at the roots through to the middle of your hair, growing lighter towards the ends.
With ombré hair colour, you can usually see a more obvious transition from one shade to another and you can choose whatever colours you fancy for your new look!
The desired ombré effect is achieved using a bespoke hand-painted freehand technique and is ideal for clients looking for a low-maintenance hair colour.
Balayage hair colour
Similar to ombré, balayage gives a more subtle effect where your hair looks sun-kissed, natural and more blended.
You are less likely to see the transition from dark to light, as highlights (or the hair colour of your choice) will be scattered throughout your hair to emphasise your hair style and accentuate facial features.
We’ve seen a growing trend in clients wanting us to add vibrant colours or pastel hues to their hair, but the sun-kissed balayage hair colour look remains one of our most asked-for looks in salon.
As with ombré, this is a low maintenance look that will require fewer visits to the hairdressers, although your hair could always benefit from a toner or glossing treatment to boost its colour and shine.
