New to Hair Colour?

Top Tips For First Time Hair Colour Clients From west with style hair salon in Westhill, Aberdeen

Are you tired of your mousey hair colour?  Feeling that your natural red hair needs a boost?  Or perhaps you’re considering covering up some patches of grey?

Whatever your reasons, we know it can be daunting when you first think about colouring your hair.  That’s why we’re here at our Westhill hair salon to reassure you and answer all your questions about colouring hair for the first time…

A Patch Test Is Essential Before Your First Hair Colour Appointment

It’s very important that you pop in for a quick skin patch test at least 48 hours prior to your first colour appointment.  This is to test for any allergies to the Wella hair colour ranges that we use.  There’s no need to book an appointment as the test  is very quick, but we cannot colour your hair without a record of a skin test.   We just need to dab a small amount of colour behind your ear which you should wipe away after 30 minutes (or sooner if it feels at all itchy or sore).  If you have had no reaction within 48 hours, then we can go ahead with your hair colour.

First Time Hair Colour – Which Hair Colour Will Suit Me?

There are multiple reasons why people might decide to colour their hair.  Some people just love change and trying an exciting new hair colour is a great way to change up your look.  Others want to give a boost to their natural shade, while some people might simply want to hide their grey hair.  The reason for your decision to colour your hair can, of course, help you choose the right shade.

As a first step, we recommend you book in for a complimentary hair colour consultation at our Westhll hair salon with one of our hair colour experts so we can help you find the perfect shade for you.

Fashion Hair Colours – Brights & Pastels

These days, women of all ages – and increasingly men too – are making a big fashion statement when it comes to their hair colour.  If you are new to hair colour and aren’t afraid to turn heads, you could consider trying a vibrant new shade.  A vivid array of colours including bright blues, mint greens, pretty pinks and sunset corals, can be used alone or together to create a totally unique colour combination!

Balayage – Natural-Looking Hair Colouring

If you would prefer to go for a more natural-looking hair colour, consider balayage.  Balayage is a very popular technique that involves colour being hand-painted painted onto certain sections of the hair.  It provides instant brightness to your hair, with a lighter colour being used toward the ends of the strands, leading to slightly darker roots.  Alternatively, face-framing balayage highlights are a very fashionable and flattering way to brighten up your hair.

Boost Your Natural Hair Colour & Cover Grey Hair

If you love your natural hair colour but would like it to look a bit richer and healthier, you could consider highlights or lowlights.   These are also a great way to blend in patches of grey hair.  The colour experts at west with style and West Man, we have the experience and expertise to find exactly the colour combination to blend with your natural colour and suit you best.

Should I Choose Temporary or Permanent Hair Colour?

Temporary Hair Colour – A temporary hair dye washes out over a few shampoos, so this could be a good option if you are new to hair colour and aren’t sure if it’s for you.  Remember, though, that you can only go darker than your natural colour with temporary hair colour, so if you want to lighten your hair, you will need to use a semi-permanent or permanent dye.

Semi-Permanent Hair Colour – You can achieve longer-lasting hair colour with a semi-permanent product.  This is a great solution if you want to subtly boost your natural hair colour or cover your first grey hairs.

Permanent Hair Colour – Permanent hair dye works by lifting the cuticles along the hair shaft and depositing the colour inside each hair strand.  Your colour will not wash out and will be permanent.  As your hair grows, your roots will need re-touching, usually every eight weeks or so.

How To Care For Coloured Hair

Once you’ve had your hair coloured for the first time, you’ll want to keep your lovely new shade looking glossy and vibrant.  Hair colour care will start in the salon as part of the dyeing process itself, where we can add Wellaplex, a specialist treatment product that will protect the bonds of your hair from damage. The result is stronger, healthier-feeling hair that holds its colour for longer – speak to your west with style stylist for more information.

We stock a full range of System Professional home care products at our Westhill hair salon, which offer the latest in hair colour protection technology.  Pop into the salon and one of our team will advise you on the most appropriate products for your particular hair type and colour.
